Leading Organizational Change
I am entering my 5th year teaching in my current district and used to view myself as someone who tried to fly under the radar. It was always easier in department meetings to be a "yes-man," to go with the flow and not speak up. Some of that was inexperience and some of it was a lack of confidence, I knew a leadership role amongst teachers was unfamiliar and uncomfortable to me, but one I had to grow into.
My Why
The question "why" digs deep. It is a question that my two-year-old daughter asks what seems like an infinite amount of times per day. In my field, my why comes from my passion. I see the vulnerable position that education is in following the COVID-19 pandemic and know that now is the time to act and adapt our teaching/learning. Within this post I will discuss my why, what, and how related to blended learning and the impact I know it can have on all of education.
Influencer Strategy
To successfully implement any new plan, regardless of the field or topic, one must be goal oriented and have the support of those around them. With that said, it is not easy to change the mindset of those who are set in their ways and comfortable/confident with what they think works. Throughout this plan I utilize a matrix based on personal/social/structural ability and motivation that provides a framework for how to get necessary supporters on board with blended learning.
The 4 Disciplines of Execution
It is one thing to develop a plan for yourself and for perspective followers, but it is another to actually stick to the plan and see it play out. The 4DX model provides direction and structure to carry out an initiative such as blended learning. The model is based of 4 disciplines aligned with 5 stages of change and works extremely well in alignment with the previously developed "Influencer Strategy." The 4DX model is process oriented and keeps a close eye on the lead measures, creating incentive for all parties involved via a compelling scoreboard.
Self-Differentiated Leadership & Crucial Conversations
There is emphasis on the need to have crucial conversations in our world today, within education or not, but it takes a special type of leader to be able to do so appropriately and effectively. A self-differentiated leader not only deeply understands oneself and their own motives, but also has a strong relationship with those working around them. Being receptive to feedback while trusting one's own ability and moving forward with confidence is what leads to necessary change. Within this post I discuss what it will take to be the leader behind my innovation plan and how I will support those working with me.
