The Whirlwind throws all the objectives at you at once. It is overwhelming and frankly inefficient. Rather than prioritizing the most important things (WIGs), we give a lesser effort to multiple objectives. The videos introduce lag/lead measures discussing how we as educators (however, our students too) spend more time focused on the end result rather than the process of reaching that result, which certainly has a negative impact.
With regard to the scoreboard method, I wholeheartedly agree. I have seen evidence of this in my classroom every year as I take lessons and make them into games of sort where students are engaged in some sort of competition. Additionally, having the students generate the scoring system, as discussed, has also shown to be a powerful system.
The WIG is the driving force, in any field. We must prioritize and understand what we are trying to accomplish and provide concrete ways to measure our success working towards them. Having a team to collaborate with and provide feedback for can make a significant impact.
