In a world that moves so fast, we unfortunately “walk by” things of this sort everywhere we go. We are so engrossed by our technology and our own personal interests that we fail to consider the state of those around us. This is more evident now than ever mental health awareness continuing to grow. My parents always told me growing up to put myself in the other person’s shoes. I think one of the biggest reasons we focus on the facts is, frankly, because it is easier. I think this can be compared to education, specifically in my field of mathematics. It is much easier for a student to memorize a procedure and replicate it than taking the time to truly understand the concepts at hand.
This can influence my video in that it prioritizes the importance of making a connection with the audience and appealing to others by way of the heart. A video should be created in a way that allows the viewer to not only relate to it, but so the viewer can easily perceive the message that is being told and see the value that it holds. Although our messages will be based in more of a professional setting, they are based around education which can live anywhere. This connects quite closely with the BSGuys argument on information versus motivation. The audience needs to be grabbed, perhaps caught off guard, and spoken to in a way that maintains interest.
Although I do believe speaking to the mind is important, the heart will be what keeps the focus of the audience. With that said, I try to speak to both. When presenting information, it is best to connect it to an example that the viewer can relate to (the heart). To structure my video in this way, I am going to have an example that I am going to build my video off. The first thing that comes to mind is using education around COVID-19 and the impact it had on student, families, and teachers alike. The urgency flows naturally from this as this may be the only time where we are in this position of education where we have recently been forced into an unfamiliar setting. It is important that we take advantage of the hand we were dealt and resources we have accumulated rather than falling back to our old ways.
