Far too often education is generalized, in fact, overgeneralized. Curriculum writing and assessment writing are hot topics in my organization, however, there have been times when both have been written by outside consultants that the district hires that know nothing about the students in my district. As a mathematics teacher, I teach relatively concrete content. However, I make it a focus of mine to tailor each lesson to my individual learners in my class. And although it is far more work, there are times where I teach the same lesson three different ways to ensure I am connecting to the students sitting in front of me.

We have discussed the difference between content vs. context. There are what seems to be an infinite number of resources out there where students can learn whatever they want online, however, it is our jobs was the learning facilitators to make the learning work for our students and to give them the skills and ability to identify what they need to learn.

Rigid curriculum restricted by deadlines and standardized assessments prevents the creativity that our students develop naturally. Too often students enter the classroom as open-canvases craving challenges and are met with dry and direct lessons lacking innovation and discovery.
